Copper manifold

Writer: Zbyšek ZapadlíkZbyšek Zapadlík

Copper manifold is for lautering. It is alternative to traditional false-bottom used in commercial breweries. In homebrew, people also often use "bazooka" - stainless mesh.

Manifold was good choice for me - cheap, efficient and can be easily made. One advantage is, that the parts are not soldered or crimped so for general cleaning, one can disassemble & clean it completely.

Part list:

Pipes are cut from one 2m long 15x1mm Cu half-hard pipe

Costs: 700 CZK (33USD)

  • 8x elbow 45°

  • 7x T -piece

  • 1x elbow 90°(optional)

  • 4x pipe 105 mm

  • 2x pipe 65 mm

  • 6x pipe 90 mm

  • 6x pipe 25 mm

Required tools:

  • Protecting glasses

  • angle grinder

  • microdrill with grinding wheels (0,5mm thickness, diameter 25mm)

  • round file - pro vyčištění vnitřních otřepů

  • vise

Consumption of grinding wheel was quite high - they are grinded away and also time to time i broke some of them. I've tried also diamand wheel, but it was not so good.

Lot of work, but it is the price for really narrow slits - just 0,6 mm.
